Open House - November 18th

The Rocky Mount CC community will hold a fall Open House on Tuesday, November 18th.  This is a time when families can visit to observe what happens at our community meetings, learn more about the programs CC offers, and ask questions about how CC might benefit their homeschools.  We welcome everyone who is interested in learning more about Classical Conversations.

Our community currently serves students who are K4 through 11th grade in our Foundations, Essentials, and Challenge A - II programs.  We meet each week to encourage one another in the pursuit of classical education and to develop skills that are difficult to practice in a homeschool setting.  If you'd like to visit our community on the 18th or if you'd like to learn more about this opportunity, you can email RockyMountCC@gmail.com.

Cycle Two

Are you ready for Cycle Two?  I just posted on my personal blog about my family's plan for homeschooling with Classical Conversations this year.  I wanted to share it over here in case someone might find it helpful!

Classical Conversations Testing

One of the many services offered through Classical Conversations is Stanford testing.  We are looking at the possibility of hosting a Stanford testing site in Rocky Mount during the spring of 2013.  We are still in the planning phases, and you can sign up for an email list to receive additional details and updates.

The Stanford-10 Achievement Test is a nationally recognized test used by educators across the US.
As a norm-referenced test, the Stanford-10 not only offers the home educator information on their student’s achievement, it also provides comparisons based on nationwide test results.

Contents of Stanford Tests:
Grades 1-2: Word study skills, vocabulary,
comprehension, spelling, listening, math,
environment
Grade 3: Vocabulary, comprehension, spelling,
listening, social studies, math, language,
science
Grades 4-12: Vocabulary, comprehension,
spelling, listening, social studies, math,
language, science, study skills

We will also be looking for volunteers to help administer the test, and you can email us at Rocky Mount CC at gmail.com (remove all the spaces) if you are interested in  participating in this way.  Proctors must have a 4-year college degree and attend training.

Nature Journaling

The science memory work we will be covering this year makes now a great time to begin a nature journal.  Charlotte Mason once said, "We are all meant to be naturalists, each in his own degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things."

I know we all want our children to see the wonder and majesty in God’s creation, and keeping a nature journal is a great way to help them develop their skills of observation.  Some of the science projects we will be completing in Foundations this fall would be great to add to an existing nature journal or to expand upon at home.

A nature journal can be as simple or complex as you’d like.  Some children will only want a place to collect loose pages while others might be excited by the idea of elaborate sketch books.  There is no right or wrong way to go about it.

One resource that might complement your science study this year is The Handbook of Nature Study.  I have come also across a few printable resources to share with any of you who may want ideas for beginning a nature journal with your students this year.
